Which Book Would You Buy?

I’m excited to announce my first book of insect photos!  Coming soon to a bookstore near you this site will be Insects & Spiders of Nicaragua !  The hardcover book will be chock-full of interesting creatures I photographed in Nicaragua last December.  The release date is tentatively scheduled for March 8th, 2009.

But I need your help!

I’ve put together five mock covers for my book.  If you saw these five on the shelf, which one would spark the most interest from you?  More importantly, which one would you buy?  After voting at the end of this entry, feel free to share your thoughts by posting a comment!

  • I'm late to this game, but I would have voted for the curled millipede. But all the shots are great.

all are good; I like the bees best because that's a great action shot of a less typical subject. Good luck with your publication!
  • Yay, another bug blog! Must link.

I have different reasons to vote for each of them:
    - I love the closeup of the stink bug face for its macro detail.
    - I love the symmetry and artistry of the coiled millipede.
    - I love the longhorned beetle, cuz that's one of the groups I study.
    - I love the stink bug on a leaf, cuz it's one of the insects I work with.
    - I love the stingless bee hive, cuz it's so... tropical!

Nice blog, I'll be back. Pay a visit if you're so inclined.

    regards--ted
  • By the way, Ted - I was just on your blog an hour or so ago reading about dung beetles! That's some coincidental sh*t, eh? :8^D
  • You mean, "escarabajos de caca"? ;-) Yes, that is really weird - I found you through Bug Girl's Blog. I've been slowly tracking down all the (good) bug blogs and adding them to my "Insects & Invertebrates" link list - I can't believe a bug blog as good as yours has escaped my notice until now.
  • Well, I split apart 70+ posts from my main website, kolbykirk.com about 3 months ago, so don't let all the posts fool you into thinking I've been around for a while. Thanks for adding my link - I'll do the same here.
  • Hey, Ted. Glad to see another bug fan on my stretch of the web! I appreciate your detailed opinion!

  • Is the "Bug Face" bug and the "Longhorn Beetle on Leaf" the same bug?
  • Hey Jonathan - No, but the "Bug Face" is the same as the "Walking Bug." A portrait of the longhorn beetle will be in the book, though. :-)
  • Heather
Haha that's not his eyeball! Is there a bug that can only be found in Nica? I would use that one. But I like the millipede and the walking bug.
  • Good question, Heather. I'm still waiting for ID confirmation on a few insects, but it is a slow process since there hasn't been a whole lotta study on insects done in Nicaragua specifically. Who knows - maybe I captured an insect or spider on film for the first time?

First I'd just like to say I can't believe you found enough bugs in Nicaragua to make a book, LOL! That's awesome. I personally like the Bug Face cover, but I think the title needs to come down a bit, so not to cover the bugs eye ball. All of the images are great though and I look forward to seeing the finished product!
  • Thanks, Michelle! Yeah, the text is covering one of its more-specialized eyes. Nice catch.
