Lighting Techniques with a Ring Flash

Below are  some examples of how a light source from different directions can dramatically change the look of your photograph.  All four shots are of the same subject, a Blue-green Sharpshooter, (Graphocephala atropunctata), but the light source is coming from different directions. I used my a MR-14EX Ring Lite for all of these photos.

In this first photo, the flash is connected to my lens. Both sides of the flash are firing at the same level of brightness.

Here I’m holding the flash just outside of the frame to the left, at about the 10 o’clock position.

In this one, the flash is being held out of frame at the 7 o’clock position.

This last shot shows what happens when you hold the flash behind the leaf and face it towards the lens.
